1. Open Start Menu >> Run and type regedit and press Enter

2. Navigate to the following path

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

3. In the right pane there will be a registry key named link

4. Double click to change the value to 00 00 00 00

5. Exit Registry and Restart your computer

After restart there will be no shortcut text appended to the new shortcuts you create and If by any chance you want to revert back you can follow the same procedure mentioned above and set the value to 15 00 00 00

How to View Hidden Files in Windows:

To view hidden files in MS Windows, follow the steps given below.

* Open Windows explorer through Windows+E shortcut key.
* Click the "Organize" menu.
* Click either "Folder and search Options".
* Click the "View" tab.

Mozilla has confirmed that it will release the next major version of Firefox on Tuesday, June 30.

Firefox 3.5 is the first major revision of the popular open-source browser since version 3 landed a little over a year ago, in June of 2008. Firefox 3.5 is based on the Gecko 1.9.1 rendering platform, which has been under development for the past year. Firefox 3.5 offers many changes over the previous version, supporting new web technologies, improving performance and ease of use, and adding new features for users.

Firefox 3.5 will also include support for the most widely-used elements of HTML 5, the set of next-generation web standards that allows for offline data access, enhanced web graphics and multimedia playback without plug-ins.

The most Essential Keyboard Shortcuts for Firefox

Instead of just wildly throwing a list of shortcuts at you, I’m going to give you scenarios where you may use them and you can then see how you can easily remember them. I’ll also only give you what I think are the really important ones, the ones I use on a daily basis to whizz my way around the Fox.

Obviously though not everything in Firefox can be accomplished with a keyboard shortcut. Installing extensions & scripts, choosing favourites and so forth requires the mouse. But basic navigation and moving around the net can be done solely with the keyboard and that in itself can save you a lot of time each day.

So upon opening your browser, you’ll want to open a tab. That’s CTRL + T. Your cursor is already in the address bar. Go ahead and type the address. Once you’re on the webpage in question, use the up and down arrow keys to scroll up and down the page.

Like the page? CTRL + D it then to bookmark it. Or CTRL + P it to send it to the printer.

Finished with the page? CTRL + W it to shut down the tab. Move along. Nothing to see here people.

Or the page could be annoying you. It may not be loading fast enough so hit the ESC button to stop it loading. Then CTRL + R to refresh the page. Still not loading properly? Then give up. Press CTRL + W to close down the tab. Move on to the next site.

If you work on those shortcuts alone and practice until you can go really fast, you will surprise yourself at how fast you can open and close tabs, access, refresh and bookmark sites. This can make a really big difference overall in your browsing habits.

To open a link on a webpage, use the TAB key and you’ll see each link being slightly highlighted as you hit the tab key :

To open that link, just press CTRL + ENTER and it will open in either a new tab or new window (depending on your Firefox configuration). But on the subject of navigating page links with keyboard shortcuts, I also recently wrote about a Firefox shortcut you can use which I use a lot every day. Check it out.

By this point, you’re probably accumulating a lot of open tabs so let’s now look at some tab navigation shortcuts.

(1) CTRL + the TAB key lets you jump forwards from tab to tab.

(2) CTRL + SHIFT + TAB lets you jump backwards from tab to tab.

(3) But the coolest one is when you can go directly to a tab by assigning it a number. So the first tab on the far left is tab number one while the eighth tab from the left is tab number eight. So to go to the first tab on the far left, just press CTRL + 1. To go to the eighth from the left, just do CTRL + 8. You’ll be taken directly there. The only limit to this is that after 9, it becomes impossible to do this shortcut as CTRL + 10 becomes impossible to do as Firefox reacts immediately after you hit the 1 key by taking you to the first tab. So if you have more than 9 tabs, this shortcut is out.

Five Firefox Tips You May Not Know About

The thing I like best about Firefox is that just when you think you know everything there is to know about the browser, something new comes along and surprises you.

I discovered five new Firefox tips today. Maybe these are old hat and you know them already. Or maybe like me, you had no idea these could be done.

1. Quick search - without going to a search engine first.

Are you reading a website and you subsequently discover a word or phrase that you want to put into a search engine? Up until now, I would just open a new tab, type in the URL for Google and manually type the word or phrase in. But it seems there is a faster easier way.

Just highlight the word or phrase with your mouse’s left-click button. Then drag the highlighted text into the address bar in the browser. Then press “enter”. Firefox will now perform a “Are you feeling lucky?” Google search for you.

2. Delete visited URL’s

When you drop down the box underneath the address bar, you can see your recent browsing history. But what if you want to remove one URL from that list? Maybe you’ve been looking at a naughty site and you don’t want your girfriend to know? Or maybe you’ve been shopping for your loved one online and you want to keep it a secret?

Just drop down the URL box, highlight the URL you want to zap then press the “delete” button on your keyboard. The URL will then be removed from the list.

3. Navigate to browser tabs using the keyboard

Instead of using the mouse to click on a tab, why not use the keyboard instead? Pressing CTRL + TAB together will bounce you from tab to tab, starting from the one in the far left and working its way along. Or if you want to go to a specifc tab straight away, you can do that too. CTRL + 2 will take you directly to the second tab from the left. CTRL + 5 will take you to the fifth tab from the left.

4. Start downloads instantly

Instead of right-clicking on a download link, choosing “save to target” and pressing enter, just drag the download link to the “downloads icon” in the toolbar. The download will start automatically.

5. Grab files off webpages, even protected webpages

Have you ever wanted a picture, file or video off a webpage but you can’t, because it’s been protected? Just right-click on the page, choose “View Page Info” then the “media” tab. Find the file you’re looking for from the list and click on “save”. (note : this doesn’t work for everything but I have still had a pretty high success rate nonetheless).

If you are looking for ways to cut down on your computer energy usage and reduce your electricity bill, here are a few tips you should definitely try out. Frankly, most of us would already be aware of many of the tips that I have listed here. Nevertheless, very few of us actually put them into practice. If anything, this list could be a reminder to you on how you can cut down on your computer’s running cost.

Many computer users do not bother with this at all thinking that computer uses much less energy compared to air conditioning units. But, considering the millions of computers used worldwide, even a little energy saved by each would make a big difference.

Here’s what you can do.

1. Shut down your computer when not in use. Do not let it run all the time. You will no harm your computer by switching it on and off as needed. Computers are designed to be that way.shutdown

2. Let it sleep after periods of inactivity.

3. Switch the monitor off when you won’t be using it for several hours.

4. Ditch your screensavers. Screensavers keep your CPU awake and hard drive active and make your computer use more energy. Screensavers especially photo screensavers may require the extra use of a graphics card, which means you’ll have the hard drive, graphic card and monitor all in use at once.

5. Utilize your computer’s power management features and modify power options. Here you can set the amount of time you want your computer to wait before entering energy savings mode.

6. Go for LCD monitors whenever possible. LCD monitors use about one-third of the electricity consumption of the traditional CRT monitors.

7. Close applications that are not in use.

8. Set the screen brightness at the lowest comfortable level.

9. If you do decide to purchase a new computer, make sure that you choose a computer and monitor that are Energy Star compliant. Energy Star compliant computers are said to be energy-efficient. If you need to use a computer all the time, try using a laptop instead of a desktop PC. In general, laptops are greener than desktops because they have been designed with power sensitivity in mind.

10. Unplug the chord off the wall after using your computer. Just because your computer is shut down doesn’t mean it is not using energy. Many pieces of electronics use some power even when they are turned off.

Hard Drive Defragmentation

I would like to share how to perform disk defragment in this week. Windows Disk Defragmenter Utility let you re-organize the used spaces on your hard disk. You can think of your hard drive as a messed up cabinet that once in a while, you'd need to spend some time to clean it up and re-organize it. While Windows Disk Cleanup Utility let you clean up and completely remove the unused/temporary files, Disk Defragmenter let you re-organize the files and folders to improve the performance of your PC.

It's a good practice to perform disk clean up and disk defragmentation every once in a while. For more details on Disk Cleanup, see this article here.

Follow the instructions below to perform a disk cleanup for your hard drives, especially the one that has Windows systems files (normally "C" drive).

Use this trick at your own risks

1. Launch the Disk Defragmenter utility by either:
- "Start" >> "Programs" >> "Accessories" >> "System Tools" >> "Disk Defragmenter", or:
- "Start" >> "Run", enter "dfrg.msc" then press Enter.
2. Select the disk you want to perform defragmentation (i.e. "Local Disk C") and click "Defragment":

Hard Drive Cleanup

Wonder why your computer is getting so slow? One very common reason is your hard drive getting full because of the temporary files it's been saving. The very first and easy thing you can try is to clean up your hard drives. Windows keeps the temporary files within your hard drives, mainly to minimize the access time on the next use. However, these files get added up, and you'd notice your computer gets slower by time. A good practice is to perform a disk cleanup every once in a while to empty out those temporary storages. This normally improves your pc's performance.

The temporary files can be just some text files or images. Yes, images! whenever you visit a website, almost everything you see on the page is downloaded to your local hard drive, stored into the temporary storage as "temporary internet files". You might notice the next time you revisit the same page, the loading speed is somehow faster. This is because Windows reuses the temporary files which it found unchanged comparing to the page content. (no wonder why you've been told to refresh the page?)

Now these files can be large! since a file can be one big file that you downloaded off the internet. Then you've used it and thought you have deleted it... but in many cases, a copy of it is still there, as a temporary file.

Follow the instructions below to perform a disk cleanup for your hard drives, especially the one that has Windows systems files (normally "C" drive).

Use this trick at your own risks

1. Launch the Disk Cleanup utility by either:
- "Start" >> "Programs" >> "Accessories" >> "System Tools" >> "Disk Cleanup", or:
- "Start" >> "Run", enter "cleanmgr" then press Enter.
2. Select the disk you want to clean up from the drop-down box (i.e. "Local Disk C") and click "OK":

3. Windows will calculate the space on your selected hard drive. This might take a few minutes depending on the size of your hard drive:

4. Once Windows is done with the calculation, Disk Cleanup Utility displays. Here you can select which storages you want to clean up (under "Files to delete"). It doesn't hurt if you select them all when you really need free spaces on your hard drive. Notice the usage size on some of these storages might be huge:

5. Click "OK" after your selections, then click "Yes" on the prompt.
6. Disk Cleanup Utility starts to clean up your hard drive. This might take a while depending on the current usage level on the storage. During the cleanup process, your computer might be very slow, so give it some time. After cleanup your hard disks, perform a disk defragmentation would really help your pc run faster.

If you suspect you have a virus on your computer, or if you just want to keep your computer safe from the threat of viruses, there are several virus-detection programs which will scan your system and let you know if any malicious programs have been found.

There are many commercial and free anti-virus programs available on the Web, all with different features and levels of security. I would like to introduces AVG Anti-Virus.

There are some steps on how to download a AVG Anti Virus Free Edition :

Install And Run AVG Anti-Virus

After installation is complete, click OK. The main AVG Control Center will now start. On the First Run screen that pops up, click Next. Click Check For Updates and then Internet which will download any necessary files to bring your AVG up to the latest version.

A window will now pop-up if there are any available updates. Click Update to download them. AVG will download and automatically install any updates. Click OK when finished.

Back on the First Run window, click Next to proceed. Leave the Daily Scanning settings as they are and click Next.

You now have the option to perform a scan to test your computer for viruses. Click Scan computer! or just click Next if you want to proceed with setting up AVG.

If you wish, you can now register your copy of AVG to receive news and product information. Otherwise, click Next and then Continue.

Here you can see your Security Status, and choose to perform scans on your whole computer or selected areas only.

When you run a complete scan, it may take a while depending on the size of your hard drive. It will scan your system for any viruses and if it finds any, it will pop up a window to inform you what action it has taken.

If possible the program will try to 'heal' any infected files, or if it is unable to clean these files it may move them to its Virus Vault, where the infected files are kept in a state where they will not be able to harm your computer, but can be retrieved later if necessary.

The AVG Anti-Virus program contains several tools which continuously monitor your system, but it is recommended that you run a complete scan of your computer regularly, at least once a month to check your computer for any infected files.

If you do not want to run a scan now, just click the Close (X) button at the top-right of the AVG window. This does not in fact stop the AVG program running, it just closes the windows so you can get on with using your PC.

Using The AVG Icon

You can tell if AVG is running as a small coloured icon will be displayed on your taskbar.

If you right-click the AVG taskbar icon you can restore the Control Center and Test Center windows. You can also perform a manual Check For Updates from this menu.

AVG will quietly monitor your PC and check for viruses while you continue using your PC. It will start automatically when you first turn on your PC and check for any updates when you connect to the Internet.

If you need to stop AVG running for any reason, right-click the taskbar icon and choose Quit AVG Control Center.

To start AVG, click the Start menu then All Programs. Click AVG Free Edition and choose AVG Control Center.

You can save your computer maintenance cost if you clean your computer on the regular basis. This will improve the cooling and performance of the computer components. Computer Tips : How to enable the advance performance setting in windows vista?

If you have noticed that the speed of your system is very slow with windows vista then today tip is very useful for you to increase the performance of windows vista. There is some default setting in vista which is used to manage the write caching on disk. By default windows enabled the write caching on disk but the advanced performance setting is disabled.

Follow the given steps to configure the advance performance setting in Windows Vista:

To enable this feature, you will need to be logged into your computer with administrative rights.

First right click on My Computer icon then select the option Manage.

Here small windows will appear with title Computer Management, now select the Device Manager option, then locate the SATA Disk under the Disk Drives.

Here select the enable advanced performance sittings on the SATA disk.

Now click on Ok button to apply the setting and restart your computer after any changes to go into effect.(*For an advise , this is recommended only for disks with a backup power supply , This setting further improves disk performance , but it also increases the risk of data loss if the disk loses power.*)
